Global semiconductor solution provider Renesas Electronics (TSE: 6723) announced today the launch of a new 64 bit general-purpose microprocessor (MPU) RZ/G3S, aimed at IoT edge and gateway devices and significantly reducing power consumption.
As the latest member of the Reza RZ/G series MPU, the RZ/G3S is designed to meet the demanding requirements of modern IoT devices, with power consumption as low as 10% in standby mode μ W (micro watt) and can quickly start the Linux operating system. This new MPU is equipped with a PCI Express interface and can achieve high-speed connection with 5G wireless modules. In addition, this product also has enhanced security features such as tamper detection to ensure data security. These features also make the product an ideal choice for IoT applications such as home gateways, smart meters, and tracking devices.

Daryl Khoo, The Vice President of Embedded Processing 1st Division at Renesas states: "The adoption rate of the Reza RZ/G series in the global industrial human-machine interface market is steadily increasing. The RZ/G3S represents the next generation of products and will further expand our presence in the rapidly growing 5G Internet of Things and gigabit Wi Fi 7 gateway markets. Reza continues to actively expand our connectivity product portfolio in these markets through strategic acquisitions to create advanced connectivity solutions with high energy efficiency at the system level and improved data utilization."
The RZ/G3S uses an Arm Cortex-A55 core with a maximum operating frequency of 1.1GHz as the main CPU, paired with two Cortex-M33 cores with a operating frequency of 250MHz as secondary CPUs. Users can allocate the workload of the MPU to the secondary CPU, allowing devices to efficiently process tasks such as sensor data reception, system function control, and power system management, thereby reducing the workload of the main CPU and reducing the number of components, achieving lower costs and smaller system sizes.

Low power standby mode with Linux fast start function
The newly added power management system in the product aims to reduce power consumption to less than 10 μ The extremely low level of W, this MPU also supports DDR self refresh function, allowing for the retention of DRAM data, while supporting fast Linux startup. The quick start function helps IoT devices that frequently run intermittently save energy and significantly extend the running time of battery powered devices. In addition, the product also provides standby mode, which can maintain the operation of the secondary CPU at power levels as low as 40mW, in order to flexibly optimize power consumption according to the specific operational requirements of each application.
Implementing 5G connectivity through PCI Express
The RZ/G3S is equipped with rich peripheral functions, including Gigabit Ethernet, CAN, USB, and PCI Express interfaces. By connecting the 5G communication module, this product can achieve high-speed communication at the gigahertz (GHz) level.
High reliability and powerful security features
Similar to other RZ/G series products, the internal memory and external DDR interface of RZ/G3S both have ECC (Error Correction Code) function to maintain data integrity. RZ/G3S can use validated Linux software packages (VLP) with industrial grade Civil Infrastructure Platform (CIP) Linux kernel. With the help of VLP, developers will receive over 10 years of maintenance support to ensure long-term protection from security threats. This product also provides various functions such as tamper detection, secure startup, and secure debugging. The RZ/G series has passed Arm PSA Level 2 certification, and Reza plans to promote RZ/G3S products to obtain this certification in the future.
Anders Holmberg, CTO at IAR, stated, "Our IAR Embedded Workbench for Arm provides inherent support for MPUs and MCUs. By combining Reza's RZ/G3S MPUs with IAR's extensive security tool solutions, developers can quickly develop high-performance, secure IoT devices and bring them to market faster."
Successful product portfolio
Renesas Electronics combines the new RZ/G3S MPU with optimized power management IC and clock products to develop a gateway design solution based on single board computers. The rich interfaces of RZ/G3S allow devices to connect various sensors through USB, CAN, RS485, UART, and I2C. It also offers high-performance wireless connectivity options to build powerful networks for home automation or IoT applications, and its multi-core design allows for real-time data processing while achieving energy savings through advanced sleep mode functionality. The "successful product portfolio" of Renesas relies on mutually compatible and seamlessly collaborative components, while adopting a technologically validated system architecture to bring optimized low-risk design and accelerate the product launch process. Based on various products in its product lineup, Renesas has launched over 400 "successful product combinations" aimed at helping users drive the design process and accelerate the product launch process.
