The VCNL36828P adopts a vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) and integrates photodiodes, application specific integrated circuits (ASICs), 16 bit ADCs, and intelligent dual I2C slave addresses in a small surface mount package of 2.0 mm x 1.0 mm x 0.5 mm. Compared with the previous generation solution, the packaging area of the device has been reduced by 20%, the standby current has been reduced by 20% to only 5 μ A, and the sunlight offset has been increased by 40% to 140 klx. The proximity sensor has a detection distance of 200 mm and a typical rated voltage of 1.8 V. The device has excellent proximity detection performance, while reducing power consumption and improving efficiency in space limited and battery powered applications.

VCNL36828P can be used for automatic wake-up and shutdown of smartphone and smartwatch screens, and can also detect whether the user is wearing true wireless stereo (TWS) headphones, virtual reality/augmented reality (VR/AR) helmets, and smart glasses. To reduce the cost of these applications, the intelligent dual I2C slave address of the proximity sensor can connect two proximity sensors without the need for a multiplexer.
